Who doesn’t love a spot of Afternoon tea? The #foodiefriday section will bring you not only reviews of places we eat but list some of the places we visit for Afternoon Tea dessert and coffee.
We decided to book the Bulgari hotel for Afternoon tea in Knightsbridge for my friends Baby Shower, she didn’t want anything flash and wanted it low key and intimate, so having researched possible hotels, this seemed most appropriate.
” Moving through from the hotel entrance, past contemporary and 17th and 18th century Roman silver pieces from the private Bulgari collection, one encounters the granite-clad lounge at the Bulgari Hotel in London. Welcoming and spacious, the lounge features a honed black granite floor and a fireplace in black granite and black cortain steel. Italian-made chairs and sofas covered in special fabrics complete the contemporary look and provide an alluring, spacious context for guests and visitors as they gather to enjoy the dynamic atmosphere. The drinks and food menu from Il Bar are available both here and in Il Bar itself. The menu, inspired to a fine modern Italian cuisine, changes throughout the day from breakfast through to light lunches, classic English afternoon tea and antipasti in the evening to share, Italian style.”
Yes if you book beforehand then you can request Halal meat to be used, in addition if you don’t want seafood or are pregnant, the hotel can cater for these requirements.
As with most Afternoon tea’s, they tend to be a relaxed affair and very laid back, I was surprised however when were were lead to sit in very informal lounge area, as we had booked for 8 people I had assumed we could be given a dining area or sofa’s designed for tea, however we were seated in the front Lounge. I had been to the Bulgari before for dinner and an event (see here for the Haute Arabia event at the Bulgari last year ), but this was my first time experiencing their Afternoon Tea. To begin with the waitress asked us what flavour tea we wanted, there were many to choose from and we decided to order a variety so we would be able to have the option of trying out a few. Amongst the ones we chose were Lime Leaf ( A citrus herbal tea ) Jasmin Pearl (hand rolled green tea pearls infused with the jasmine flowers), Dragons Well (high-grade green China tea with a nutty taste ) and Early Grey . Naturally for any avid tea drinker Earl Grey is the epitome of afternoon tea choices, its light, fragrant and accompanies food well. The tea arrived in beautiful Marble Teapots accompanied by different coloured tea cups and saucers. These were so appealing to the eye and so cute. I tried all of the teas and being an avid green tea drinker enjoyed the Jasmine Pearl one particularly.
The sandwiches took a while to come, we had to remind the waitress a couple of times which I found quite frustrating, as eager as the staff were to help they did take a while to bring over the tea, at one point we had requested extra vegetarian sandwiches for my friend who was pregnant and this took forever, I wasn’t impressed! It took a good hour or so until we had received the correct sandwiches by which time we had been put off.
Having been slightly frustrated with the time it took for receiving our sandwiches we were then presented with our platters of cakes. The cake holder arrived with a selection of warm Scones with fresh cream and butters, a choice of pastries (Tart Tartin, vanilla choux, chocolate bar and fig macaroons).
For anyone who knows me, you will know I am a Macaroon lover. I am totally obsessed with them, they are the perfect sweet appetiser and they always hit the spot, saying that not all macaroons are great and its important to have good quality ones to truly appreciate the taste. I was however on this occasion disappointed, there was a lack of choice of flavours, they weren’t as fresh as expected and just not that great. The Scones were lovely, soft, moist and warm and the cream nice and fresh. The Tart Tatin equally was nice and had a lovely rich flavour.
The hotel also provides a host of other hot and cold drinks and accompaniments and these can be chosen from the menu to accompany the Afternoon Tea. We had one baby with us and the staff were very hospitable and child friendly.
There is a very relaxed and laid back vibe in the lounge, there is nice background music which is not too loud but nice enough to relax to. The sofa’s were very comfortable, but with the way the lounge is set out, if your in a large group it is hard to be sat around the table comfortably as there is too much space.
I am not sure to be honest if I would come here for tea again. I have been fortunate enough to visit a number of hotels and establishments in and around London for Afternoon tea and this was nowhere near the top 10. I think a lot improvement needs to be made in terms of attention to detail and service. I do have a fondness for the hotel though and I am a fan of the Bulgari brand so it was a shame.
We paid £35 each
