I’ve popped into Sketch a number of times for a quick drink with friends or a cup of tea amidst shopping and fell in love with the stylish restaurant’s quirky nature. Sketch is a townhouse just off Regent Street which comprises of a number of restaurants, bar, tea room and parlour (one of which is Michelin star). We decided to visit the Gallery (known as the Pink Room, which is known for its afternoon tea) in celebration of my friends birthday.
sketch is a complex and unique site. Conceived by French master chef Pierre Gagnaire and restaurateur Mazouz, it has attracted unprecedented media reaction for its myriad food, drink and entertainment styles since it opened in December 2002. Gagnaire’s culinary genius has inspired the menus throughout sketch. His eponymous Michelin three-starred Paris restaurant has a distinctive menu style, which Gagnaire had adapted for sketch. Executed by his acolytes, the food is imaginative, bold, ground-breaking and delicious. These two visionaries have come together to create sketch…
No- however there is such a large selection of vegetarian and sea food sandwiches, and the staff could not be any more considerate of dietary requirements, They made sure there was plenty more veg sandwiches available.
The menu is detailed and has a large selection of tea from classic British options such as Earl Grey and Darjeeling to Green tea and Herbal infusions, all which of course have had a ‘Sketch twist’ added to them. Amongst our party we chose, Earl Grey, Darjeeling and Flowering Osmanthus (my pick and it totally hit the spot ), not to mention looked so pretty.
Our waitress introduced herself and explained to us that we could choose from the Standard Afternoon tea or we could upgrade to the Alcoholic or Non alcoholic option. Being non drinkers we decided to go for the ‘Non alcoholic’ option which was accompanied by sparking grape juice, a great option if you are dining for a special occasion but don’t want to miss out on something special to sip on!
Our Afternoon Tea platter could not have looked more appetising, the sandwiches comprised of a selection of salmon, egg mayonnaise (which were accompanied by a mini egg on top which just looked far too beautiful to eat! As well as a selection of toasted pesto and cheese sandwiches which were carefully wrapped in heated paper. What I found particularly appetising was the fact the sandwiches weren’t just your standard bread variety, these were made up of a selection of pitta, flat bread and crust-less sour dough-very unique!
The sweet selection was extensive, there was a selection of macarons, pastries, meringues and tarletts. The macarons were nothing to write home about to be honest but they were very fresh, the scones were so tasty but having gorged on the savoury selection I didn’t have much room to appreciate just how nice they were. The other sweet selection had be boxed for later because we were just so full!
The scene is very trendy, art deco, full of fashionista’s, girlfriends and couples. The waitresses wear vintage style uniforms which is very endearing and the cutlery was definitely a talking point amongst my party, I could not love it anymore. The ambiance of not only the Gallery but of Sketch overall is bewitching. Culinary delights beguile and there is wonder around each corner, from the dark cloakrooms, to the pod style toilets and to the super trendy and sophisticated staff. Just wondering around Sketch is an experience in itself.
I most definitely want to try the Lecture Room and Library restaurant so yes a return visit will be on the cards one day soon!
We paid £52 each which is considerably expensive for Afternoon tea. Having frequented many establishments in London and the average price being £38 this is higher then most places, however having said that, the tea is not typical of most establishments and there is a mixture of warm and cold food. It is pricey but worth the very unique experience, it is worth saving it for a special occasion.
